Stewards VISTA: Mountain Studies Institute-Engagement

VISTA will help develop the Silverton Innovation Center to enable innovators, researchers, and students to work in the realm of legacy mine impacted communities. The innovation center will provide a means to innovate technologies in the harsh, alpine environment surrounding legacy mines in the San Juan Mountains. VISTA will help with needs and opportunity assessments, strategic planning, and developing funding sources and partnerships. The VISTA will also continue to grow the associated San Juan Mining and Reclamation Conference and the Silverton Innovation Expo. VISTA will continue to build our Bridging Mountains Network by expanding the teaching resources. VISTA will train, coordinate, and lead adult and student volunteers in environmental restoration of important local resources. VISTA will help coordinate the San Juan Resilience Youth Summit. At this summit rural students will learn and present at a professional style summit, gaining valuable skills and exposure to career opportunities. The VISTA will plan, coordinate, and facilitate the summit focusing on Silverton area engagement. Finally, the VISTA member will seek funding for MSI to sustain and grow these efforts through grant writing and other fundraising.
