Stewards VISTA: Mountain Studies Institute - Youth Summit
Mountain Studies Institute VISTAs helped coordinate and pull of the successful, first and second annual Silverton Innovation Expos and the San Juan Mining and Reclamation Conference. These events have stimulated the Silverton economy directly and built capacity for future economic development by advancing the mine remediation conversation, breaking down inhibiting barriers for innovators, reclamation companies, and agencies to accomplish work in the area. The events have also spurred conversation of an innovation center in Silverton, which could be a huge economic and environmental boon to San Juan county and the greater San Juan Mountain region. VISTAs have significantly expanded MSI’s service learning and citizen science programs. They have built capacity by training volunteers; developing teaching materials that are now available to MSI staff for years to come, as well as online for educators to use; and building local support for both MSI and the service-oriented projects that we’ve worked on. By teaching folks about the local issues while getting hands on to resolve them, participants learn what they need to be civically engaged and become personally invested to protect their resources. Specifically, these efforts have included launching a bighorn sheep monitoring citizen science program; developing engaging activities and field trips around acid mine drainage and remediation; and leading many volunteers on wetland revegetation, service-learning trips.
