*PRC - Prickly Pear Land Trust - Academic Engagement

A substantial body of evidence suggests that environmental programming in schools is an incredibly effective tool in improving student performance and can increase engagement in STEM education. Negative consequences for schools that have low standardized test scores has influenced schools and teachers to be more focused on test preparation. As a result, experiential learning that integrates subject matter in meaningful ways has been de-emphasized or eliminated. The goal of this project is to provide services to K-12 students living in poverty to improve academic engagement by developing and implementing afterschool, summer, and in-school experiential educational programming utilizing properties located in low-income areas of the Helena Valley. By providing increased outdoor, experiential learning opportunities, students that struggle in the classroom are provided with opportunities to excel and thrive in a different learning environment, increasing their chances at success in school.
