WCSD Farm to School VISTA

Farm to School is a national movement that connects schools and local farms in order to serve healthy meals in school cafeterias; provide agricultural, health, and nutrition education; and support local and regional farmers. Farm to School began in Weld County School District 6 (WCSD6) in 2008 when the District purchased cherry tomatoes for $240. Since then the program has expanded to fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat and poultry items. Today, almost 100% of our meals are prepared from scratch in our Central Production Kitchen (CPK), and about 25% of our food purchases are local. Weld County School District 6, Nutrition Services Department located in Greeley, CO, supports student achievement by offering healthy, great-tasting meals, and promoting overall wellness through nutrition education opportunities and connecting students to their food via Farm to School programs. We have been on a mission to kick out highly processed foods and completely revamp our system which includes opening a centralized production kitchen to support the preparation of fresh meals from scratch and sourcing local ingredients when possible. Nutrition Services is nearing our ten year anniversary of our Farm to School programs.
