Nutrition Education and Gleaning Coordinator

The Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) of Washington, is a nonprofit Community Action Agency established in 1971, that strives to eliminate unemployment, poverty, illiteracy, and racism so all people can live with greater human dignity. This specific position is based in Yakima, Washington. The Nutrition Education and Gleaning Coordinator’s tasks would depend on the time of the year. During the growing and harvesting season (April - October), the VISTA member will be responsible for managing the gleaning program, coordinating volunteers, networking with farmers, and building relationships at the farmers market. During the off-season (November - March), the VISTA member will spend their time coordinating the SNAP-Ed program, developing nutrition education curriculum, leading cooking classes, and creating outreach materials. This AmeriCorps VISTA position is a part of the Harvest VISTA team, sponsored by Harvest Against Hunger in Seattle, WA. Through the Harvest VISTA Program, AmeriCorps VISTA members are placed at local and national hunger relief agencies, where they create new opportunities for produce collection, volunteer recruitment, gleaning and gardening. By design, specific activities vary by location to meet community needs and available resources. Harvest VISTAs develop relationships with local growers, recruit new volunteers, build effective transportation networks and identify necessary resources to make these new programs successful and sustainable.
