Harvest Against Hunger - King County Farmer's Share

In Seattle, the Harvest Against Hunger VISTA will serve with the King County Farmer’s Share, a new project coordinated by Rotary First Harvest, Hopelink, the South King County Food Coalition, and Seattle Food Committee. The project aims to increase the amount and variety of fresh produce available for food insecure populations in King County, by coordinating relationships between growers and food banks. These efforts will build the capacity of the regional hunger relief system to break cycles of poverty and hunger in King County. Rotary First Harvest’s program, Harvest Against Hunger, acts as a program incubator and catalyst, utilizing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA who build sustainable community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects, to regional food security assessments, to expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. VISTAs serve with their projects for a year, recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges related to supply chain management, like the transportation and distribution of gleaned produce, and creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs. Harvest Against Hunger projects also aim to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity. www.firstharvest.org Are you interested in hunger relief, food waste, sustainable agriculture, nutrition, or public health?
