Mountain Roots Fundraising, Outreach, and Events Coordinator

Mountain Roots is a Community Food Systems initiative located in the Rocky Mountain headwaters community of Gunnison-Crested Butte, CO. Environment, outdoor recreation, sense of place, and quality of life are important to people who choose to live here, despite the rugged conditions. But, we are a Class 2 food desert where barriers to equitable food access are physical (geographic isolation), economic, cultural, and educational. This VISTA position offers a platform to put skills in business, marketing, communication, fundraising, and event planning into action. The ideal candidate is an outgoing, highly organized, self-motivated ‘people person’ who regularly takes initiative and is interested in developing and testing new strategies for raising funds, increasing donor engagement, and creating powerful messaging and advocacy initiatives. Our VISTA joins a small but passionate team and will work to strengthen outreach, coordinate events, and spearhead key fundraising efforts to support the charitable work of the organization. The VISTA’s role in developing resources and partnerships, developing new strategies for community, volunteer, and donor engagement, and being able to field-test, reflect on, and improve these new strategies is essential to transform our rapid growth into sustainable growth and to continue to meet the community need. Overall, Mountain Roots takes a systems approach to community food system work. Actively engaging community members in increasing organic food production simultaneously builds food security, improves community health, and promotes active conservation of our water and land. Programs include a district-wide Farm to School program, six organic gardens and a 2-acre community farm, Backyard Harvest (a grow-a-row / food rescue project), Cooking Matters, SNAP+, Kids Cook!, and more.
