2019-2020 Resident Engagement Coordinator VISTA

Heartland Housing provides quality, affordable housing to people throughout Chicago, IL, and Madison and Milwaukee, WI. We believe that stable, affordable housing is foundational to the development of both people and communities. The Resident Engagement Coordinator VISTA works with Heartland Housing’s Resident Services Department in two affordable housing buildings on the north side of Chicago. Resident Services works with residents to equip them with the skills and resources they need to be successful in their housing. The Resident Engagement Coordinator VISTA’s role is to identify resident leaders and help develop their leadership capacity, in order to build opportunities for participation in their community and the issues that affect them. The VISTA is also responsible for maintaining and growing our resource guide, which involves outreach to community organizations and service providers. An ideal candidate demonstrates patience, shows initiative in reaching out and building new relationships, has experience in community organizing and leadership development, and is comfortable working with people from many different backgrounds. The populations served are low-income adults, ranging in age, but primarily 50 years of age and older. The VISTA must have an interest in working with seniors, people with disabilities, and people who are living with mental illness.

Member Duties : There are three main projects for this VISTA position: 1. The VISTA will develop resident leadership skills and opportunities in three main areas of activity: Volunteer activity, building opportunities for access to and investment in community resources and engagement in internal and external community. 2. The VISTA develops or revises a user-friendly community resource guide for 2 properties. Build on previous VISTA’s work, keeping online sources current, developing relationships with local resource organizations, collaborating with like-organizations on building resources for the Uptown/Edgewater community. 3. The VISTA will be responsible for ensuring that systems are developed and implemented by end of service that allow sustainability of Objectives 1 and 2.
