Friends of Aine outreach VISTA

Friends of Aine is committed to helping grieving children and families. Currently, we have a bereavement program running in Merrimack, NH but have recently expanded services to Manchester, NH to better serve that community. All of our services are free. The Manchester community has unique socioeconomic and cultural conditions that may limit access to care if it is not held within city limits and/or cannot be reached by public transportation. By expanding our services to the Manchester area, many more families will have access to the support and services we provide. Manchester, NH poverty rates are much higher than NH state averages. Manchester is a community in need. 19.5 % of Manchester residents’ income is below poverty level, higher than the state’s average of 10%. 18.6 % of Manchester’s youth live at poverty level, higher than the state’s average of 7.4%. Additionally, due to the Opioid Crisis in NH; more children are experiencing loss of a parent/guardian. NH has 2nd highest rate of opioid-related overdose deaths in the country (drugabuse.gov). From 2013 – 2016, opioid-related deaths tripled in NH (drugabuse.gov). In 2017, 50% of the children receiving services from Friends of Aine (in partnership with Home, Health, and Hospice Care) were suffering a loss directly related to opioid use (Better Impact data).

Member Duties : The Friends of Aine outreach VISTA seeks to break/prevent the cycle of poverty for children who are experiencing the loss of a parent/guardian, many due to the Opioid Crisis in NH, by increasing access to affordable high quality services. In 2017, 50% of the children receiving services from Friends of Aine (in partnership with Home, Health, and Hospice Care) were suffering a loss directly related to opioid use (Better Impact data). The VISTA project will support those children who have suffered a loss, and help put them on a path for future success. The VISTA will assist by developing a volunteer program that will support our programs. Additionally, the VISTA will work on community outreach, identifying resources and strengthening contacts. The VISTA member will also assist with fundraising events helping our program to grow and support our community’s most needy population.
