Literacy First is a K-2 tutoring program that provides intensive, effective tutoring to growing readers in underserved communities. We focus on achieving racially equitable outcomes for growing readers, including one-to-one literacy interventions, staff training, instructional coaching, data-centered advising, and bilingual and culturally sustaining reading resources and interventions. This is a great opportunity to: - Be a part of a national movement toward social justice - Gain professional development and leadership skills - Network with other non-profit organizations in Austin, TX - Pursue an alternative teaching certification through Region 13 during your second year of service (optional) What's Involved? - Tutors serve for a 9-month term from September 1, 2023 - May 26, 2024. - This includes paid training starting on September 1st - Conduct daily 1-on-1 tutoring sessions (20-30 minutes each) with 8-10 K-2nd grade students at one assigned Austin elementary school campus - Teach using a highly structured, research-based literacy curriculum - Weekly individualized support from your literacy expert coach 3 positions are available: Three-Quarter Time 36 hours per week: Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM Half-Time 30 hours per week: Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM Reduced Half-Time 20 hours per week: Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM Who we’re looking for: - Interest in literacy, education, community service, social justice, or non-profits - Desire to work with young students ages 5-8 - Ability to work cohesively on a team - Proficient computer skills, including data entry and email correspondence If you speak Spanish, consider applying for a bilingual tutor position to teach students to read in Spanish.

Member Duties : Tutors will work with a caseload of students to implement a structured literacy curriculum each day. Planning time and breaks are built into the schedule. Ideal candidates will be able to follow a descriptive and well-organized curriculum while remaining flexible and adaptable to the needs of a school campus schedule. Members attend team meetings on campus, compile student data, and share this information with school teachers and administrators. Service with Literacy First requires a strong work ethic, flexibility, and advocacy for children. No prior teaching experience is required. Literacy First supports tutors with comprehensive training and weekly on-site coaching. Embrace the chance to work with young learners and build relationships without the workload of teaching an entire classroom of students.
