Prescott Farm Environmental Ed Ctr Volunteer Coord VISTA

Prescott Farm Environmental Education Center helps Lakes Region community members make meaningful connections to the natural world, generating interest and promoting hands-on learning, discovery, and environmental stewardship. Prescott Farm is located in Laconia, New Hampshire, a small city of approximately 16,500 people that is the economic hub of New Hampshire’s lakes region and Belknap County. According to the US Census Bureau, 16.4% of Laconia’s population lives below the federal poverty level and data from the NH Department of Education Division of Education Analytics and Resources, Bureau of Educational Statistics reveals that in 2017/2018 more than 50% of Laconia students were eligible to receive free/reduced lunch at school. In addition to a large segment of economically disadvantaged families, Belknap County as a whole is struggling with high rates of substance misuse. An article by Rick Green that appeared in the Laconia Daily Sun in June 2018 noted that, “Belknap County has among the highest per capita drug overdose death rate in a state that’s No. 3 nationally for this statistic.” (Green, 2018) Prescott Farm responds to the needs of underserved community members in a variety of ways, making it possible for people across every economic strata to access the physiological and mental health benefits of being in nature. Our team of professional educators use hands-on methods to instill a sense of curiosity and wonder in program participants including offering a free Harvest Festival as a way of giving an enriching outdoor experience to our community, a nature-themed WildQuest Camps every year during school vacations and nature-based classroom programs.

Member Duties : The Prescott Farm Volunteer Coordinator VISTA will assist in developing comprehensive procedures necessary for a sustainable volunteer program including recruitment, scheduling and oversight of volunteers, and matching volunteers’ interests and skills to activities that are mutually rewarding to the volunteer and Prescott Farm. The VISTA will also track volunteer efforts in terms of time and organizational impact, coordinate our annual volunteer appreciation event, and facilitate communication with current and past volunteers in an effort to encourage ongoing engagement with Prescott Farm. The volunteer program at Prescott Farm will allow us to create expanded volunteer opportunities at Prescott Farm over the next three years which will, in turn, allow us to expand the topics of our hands-on educational programs offered to low-income community members, school groups, our campers and our preschool students.
