Community and Family Outreach VISTA

The Indiana Migrant Education Program through the Indiana Department of Education exists to support migratory children as they overcome educational disruption and other barriers to academic and economic achievement due to their migratory lifestyle. A migrant student is any child ages 0-21 who moves across school district lines, either by themselves or with a guardian who is a qualifying migrant worker, to seek qualifying seasonal or temporary agricultural work. Over 2,100 migrant children ages 0-21 received supplementary educational, supportive, and referral services in Indiana in 2015-2016. The Migrant Education Program seeks to break the cycle of poverty by providing migrant students the necessary support to achieve their academic goals. Services include tutoring and summer programs, mental health referrals, career counseling, and wraparound health and medical services through community partnerships. We aim to promote the academic success of migrant students by providing access to the same rigorous college- and career-ready academic standards which all Indiana students are expected to meet in order to empower the students to graduate from high school and access higher education and higher-paying careers. VISTAs will work collaboratively with community organizations to educate them about the migrant program and build mutually beneficial partnerships to assist migrant families overcome barriers while in Indiana. They will work with Migrant Education staff and families to identify needs and connect families to local available resources. VISTAs will facilitate ongoing communication and plan leadership activities that aid in the implementation and sustainability of newly-formed Parent Advisory Councils, empowering families to have voice and serve as advocates and leaders in their communities. Dates 2/4/2019-2/3/2020
