*FIT VISTA-New Horizons Volunteer Assistant VISTA
 
 
 
Since 1973, New Horizons has worked to assist low income persons to address the social issues facing them. Today we’re an adult homeless shelter, a soup kitchen, a food pantry, and Angie's Shelter for Women. Last year we served 73,444 meals (including 1,132 kids) in our soup kitchen, gave away 12,134 grocery bags in our food pantry and provided 23,443 shelter nights of safe housing. The need for all of our services continues to be high as these were all increases over the prior two consecutive years. In Manchester, affordable housing is extremely limited. Coupled with high utility rates, gasoline prices and the lack of living wage jobs; families and individuals can become “food insecure” very quickly. Many of our clients struggle with mental illness as well as physical illness, and an increasing number have substance use issues. Staff at New Horizons saved four lives in 2017 from overdose. Medical experts told us they would have died without our intervention. By comparison in the prior two year period, no lifesaving intervention was necessary.

Member Duties : • Develop a thorough and accurate and sustainable in-kind donation tracking system. • Develop a better, overall volunteer tracking mechanism, and targeted communication to volunteers to strengthen our relationship with volunteers. Establish a formal training process for all new volunteers. Formal training will be offered to all current volunteers as well. • On occasion, travel to events or other locations on nights or weekends will be necessary.
