CCMA Training and Serving the Whole Veteran

The overarching goal of the project is to build a strong and sustainable culture of care and support for veteran students who attend or may matriculate at the University of the District of Columbia. The project intends to conduct outreach to veteran students and to veterans in the community at-large to help inform and build a network of responsive training, services and supports that strengthen the recruitment, persistence and graduation of veterans. Furthermore, the projects aim to shift the service ethos of student veterans from military-related to community-related service, with the goal of helping veteran students connect with fellow veterans and others in need in their community. The meaningful and enduring personal support networks that develop may enable more veterans to access services that could help prevent or ameliorate homelessness, lack of employment, military family issues, substance/use/abuse, emotional distress and quality of life. A third goal of the project is to identify and develop strategies for addressing barriers to school, career and life success that may be unique to subgroups of military veterans: female veterans, homeless veterans, those suffering from post-traumatic stress, depression and traumatic brain injuries. The University’s location in the nation’s capital and its status as the city’s only public institution, a Historically Black College/ University (HBCU) and an urban land-grant institution positions it to serve veterans living in DC and the surrounding Metropolitan area. The University’s Chief Academic Officer and the Chief of Student Services and Supports closely collaborate on programs designed to serve all the needs of our very diverse, often non-traditional, student-body, and veterans are a critical constituency—and potentially sizable, if we can develop a model program for serving their needs. Under the umbrella of Student Services and Supports falls the Office of Military and Veterans Student Services.
