AmeriCorps LEAP Initiative

Members are matched to early childhood Head Start and other early childhood programs to provide 1:1 social-emotional school readiness support to children needing a stronger foundation in emotional intelligence. Focused interventions and skill development during classroom experience include activities to build positive and effective social skills; practice in recognizing and regulating emotions; and encouraging curiosity, developing calm, and celebrating learning confidence within the classroom environment. Members promote early childhood developmental assets, develop positive relationships to encourage growth and achievement of children in classroom, and connect with parents/caregivers through Reading Rocks! book distribution to encourage routine reading at home. Routine home reading strengthens child/adult bonding, expands word awareness and word knowledge that gives each child a more equal footing for Kindergarten success. Members coordinate family reading and service events throughout the school year.
