Stewards VISTA: North East Trees

The North East Trees Youth Environmental Stewards (YES) program provides vocational training for youth (ages 16-24) by teaching them marketable skills in urban forestry and sustainable landscaping. This training program prepares the participants for positions in the green industry. Some of the graduates have gone on to work with government agencies such as the Mountains Recreations and Conservation Authority, California State Parks, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Park Service. Others have found employment in the private sector with large companies such as Bright View and West Coast Arborists or have moved to other non-profits such as Heal the Bay and the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. Many more have gained the confidence to enroll in college or university programs with an environmental focus.

Member Duties : The VISTA will develop a recruitment and training program to provide new skills to under served residents in L.A. River watershed communities that will make them more competitive in obtaining the environmental stewardship-related jobs, arising from the river’s long-term revitalization. Additionally, this recruitment and training will provide educational impact for residents, who will learn about the city’s history and other river corridor communities, fueling community pride and civic vigilance. North East Trees looks forward to these ongoing relationships, and the support of housing agencies such as US Department of HUD to identify other opportunities to recruit and engage residents in the proposed training program.
