South Bend Home Corps ~ Empowers homeowners to understand bills and manage energy and water use. ~ Assesses homes for energy or water savings opportunities and safety and health hazards. ~ Installs basic efficiency and weatherization measures. ~ Facilitates homeowner in accessing other City or community programs for significant repair or health/safety issues. ~ Hosts public workshops and education events. South Bend Home Corps increases financial stability, improves housing quality, and improves the environment. Members will gain valuable customer service, home repair, and energy efficiency skills, which are in high demand in the job market. We believe that diversity increases the success of any team – therefore, retired persons and persons with construction experience are especially encouraged to apply. Member Duties : Members serve in homes to 1) teach residents to understand and manage utility costs 2) identify potential energy/water savings or safety issues (e.g., non-working smoke detectors or possible lead paint), and 3) install basic efficiency and weatherization measures (e.g., LED bulbs, weather stripping, programmable thermostats). Members will build relationships with and connect residents to additional housing resources. Members will track and analyze resident's energy and water data and produce reports. Members will help identify and recruit residents for the program. Members will host public events to provide energy, sustainability, and residential health/safety education to the wider community. Members will perform additional sustainability, energy, waste reduction, home repair and community-building activities as directed by the City of South Bend’s Office of Sustainability (e.g., park clean-ups, helping with a green business event, providing recycling at a community festival).
