Working In Neighborhoods VISTA

Since 1978, Working In Neighborhoods’ (WIN) mission has been “to empower people to make informed choices for themselves and their neighborhoods through community building, home ownership, and economic learning.” WIN works with community leaders, neighborhood businesses, partner organizations, and residents to make sure they have a say in shaping the future for their communities and are part of the decision-making process in redevelopment efforts. WIN’s project will help bring residents out of poverty by strengthening relationships between existing businesses and the community at large, connecting businesses into community and economic development efforts, and help residents increase awareness of and access to job opportunities in the community and nearby.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will work as part of WIN’s community development team on our “Out of Poverty” initiative. This focuses on the resident-led redevelopment of neighborhoods along the Beekman Street Corridor with a goal to bring 40% of residents out of poverty within a generation. Our six-fold strategy includes housing, walkability/transportation, youth and education, health/food access, jobs/economic development, and beautification/safety. The VISTA member will build relationships with existing local businesses and work with businesses, residents & community partners to develop a tool or process to promote employment opportunities to members of the community. In addition, the VISTA will work with neighborhood businesses to develop a neighborhood business association and organize community meetings and events that support formation of a neighborhood business association and/or connect residents to jobs, apprenticeships, and/or training & certification.
