Harvest Against Hunger International Rescue Committee-SeaTac

Washington’s South King County is home to a diverse population from all corners of the globe. One of the common struggles of families arriving in this country is navigating the complex and often damaging food system that exists here. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and its New Roots program aims to increase access to healthy food, promote family health and wellness, and create space and skills for healthy community integration. Within this context, a major milestone of the New Roots program in South King County will be to establish successful garden self-governance models in order to continue developing partnerships for community garden and farming spaces for low-income communities. Rotary First Harvest’s program, Harvest Against Hunger, acts as a program incubator and catalyst, utilizing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA who build sustainable community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects, to regional food security assessments, to expanding run community gardens and food bank farms. VISTAs serve with their projects for a year, recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges related to supply chain management, like the transportation and distribution of gleaned produce, and create systems to collect data and evaluate programs. Harvest Against Hunger projects also aim to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity. www.firstharvest.org

Member Duties : Based out of the IRC offices in SeaTac, WA, the VISTA will improve systems for program communication with volunteers and partners, monitoring and evaluation of programming, and volunteer and intern engagement. As the program expands its reach by opening new gardens and engaging new communities, it needs to engage new partners and volunteers to continue its strong history of garden-centered food access, health and wellness, and community integrated service provision. The VISTA will support the expansion of the New Roots food access projects by collaborating on the development of referrals and enrollment systems to connect IRC clients from other programs with food access, integration, and wellness services that New Roots offers. The VISTA will also design effective strategies for client outreach and engagement in order to help build stronger year-round programming on food access and security for program participants, including newly arrived families.
