LCCT: Explore Austin Evaluation Coordinator

Explore Austin teams low-income, minority youth (Explorers) with caring and committed adult Mentors for a six-year journey, using the outdoors as a classroom to teach youth leadership. Explore Austin believes that through the support of a dedicated mentor and exposure to profound outdoor adventure, adolescents are provided with the conditions they need to develop life skills, such as grit, persistence, and optimism. Youth enter Explore Austin as sixth graders and become a part of a 20-member team: 5 Mentors and 15 Explorers. We currently serve 270 at-risk youth, who represent some of the most underserved areas of Austin, and 90 Mentors. Our program is delivered via two main activities: Saturday Challenges and Summer Wilderness Trips. Saturday Challenges: Nine 6-hour outings each year connect Explorers to local outdoor activities and learning experiences. Explorers learn to canoe, rock climb, mountain bike, and backpack, in addition to discussing social and emotional developmental topics with Mentors. Summer Wilderness Trips: Each year Explorers and Mentors embark on challenging week long adventures in the wild backcountry's of Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Shared challenges fortify bonds and trust, while Mentors translate the ever present teachable moments of the outdoors into life lessons such as success and failure, teamwork, self-sufficiency, goal setting, and problem solving. Unlike other mentor programs that last for shorter periods of time, Explore Austin serves youth for six years. Explorers and Mentors have demonstrated their dedication through high retention rates over the past 10 years. In 2017, Explorers received 59,940 hours of mentoring and traveled a collective 11,280 miles during their Summer Wilderness Trips.
