Austin-Based Economic Development VISTA Leader 2018-2019

The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) VISTA project seeks to increase capacity in economically distressed rural communities to alleviate poverty, reduce unemployment, and provide a better quality of life. In its third pilot year, this project has scaled to cover five states in the Southwest region and two states in the Denver Region. The selected VISTA Leader will be instrumental in ensuring sustainable program growth, clear communication among stakeholders, effectiveness of the program, and supporting an engaged team of VISTA Members. The VISTA Leader will be located in Austin, Texas. They will spend time working with the EDA project sponsor, their immediate supervisor, and their regional VISTA peers to expand and build the capacity of the individual VISTA members and their respective service sites. The VISTA Leader will serve as a resource on the VISTA program and for economic development principles (emphasized early in their training) for the VISTA team. It is expected that the VISTA Leader strengthen the training and development of EDA VISTA Members, track the impact of the VISTAs throughout the region, develop a strong VISTA recruitment and retention program; and in addition, will work to add value to the broader EDA district partner network. The overall EDA Mission is "to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy." Please also note that in order to qualify for this position you must have served either as a VISTA, an AmeriCorps Member, or as a Peace Corps Volunteer.

Member Duties : Initially, the VISTA will be assisting EDA identify and develop ongoing professional development opportunities, primary orientation, and trainings programs to strengthen VISTA Member capacity. During that time, the VISTA will also attend trainings on economic development principles and will be researching economic development resources in order to better understand the support required by VISTA Members. Throughout their service, the VISTA Leader will support the other VISTA Members through ongoing training, tracking development and site activities, and facilitating idea sharing and coordination of member and service site programs. The VISTA Leader will support the tracking of metrics which measure the economic impact the program is having in the region. Finally, the VISTA will be assisting EDA with recruitment efforts and primary onboarding and retention programs.
