UWCCR Robla Community Engagement VISTA

In 2016, United Way California Capital Region (UWCCR) made a promise to our community when we launched our Square One Project. Ending poverty starts in school and over the next 20 years, we will make a significant increase in the number of kids who graduate from high school ready for success in college and beyond. With the Square One Project kids will: be ready for kindergarten, exceed reading and math standards through middle school, transition to high school well, graduate from high school, and succeed in higher education creating a better life for themselves, their community and the next generation. We have identified the four building blocks for success - keeps kids in school, keep them on track, set high expectations, and ensure strong support. The project launched through a partnership with Robla School District in northern Sacramento. Robla School District is a small five-school elementary-only, and one preschool district that has a student population of approximately 2,500 students. Approximately 93 percent of families in this school district qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, meaning household income is low. "We're excited to be one of the first school districts where the Square One Project has launched," said district superintendent Ruben Reyes. "This is a district with a lot of need, but [with] a lot of awesome kids who are going to do amazing things in our community."
