Housing Preservation Coordinator VISTA

The Center for Disability & Elder Law, Inc. (CDEL), is a not-for-501(c)(3) corporation serving the legal needs of low-income seniors and people living with disabilities. CDEL commenced operations in 1984. CDEL was founded to help close the profound gap in the access justice faced by those marginalized by poverty, specifically seniors and persons living with disabilities. CDEL has a dual mission:1) To provide quality pro bono legal services to low-income seniors and persons with disabilities in Cook County, and 2) To foster the spirit of pro bono service throughout the Chicago legal community. CDEL accomplishes the first goal of its mission by providing pro bono legal services through direct representation in several civil practice areas (Housing, Basic Estate Planning/Guardianship, Consumer and Family Law). CDEL also provides legal services through community programs. CDEL accomplishes the second goal of its mission by providing training and supervision to volunteer attorneys and placing pro bono cases with attorneys. CDEL utilizes in house and outside volunteers to provide legal services within all of CDEL’s programs. The VISTA Housing Preservation Coordinator will work with CDEL staff attorneys and volunteers to amalgamate the various housing-related projects that CDEL offers with the goal of creating a single, cohesive Housing Preservation program, with a community and outreach focus). We are looking for a VISTA who has an interest in legal aid and housing legal services. Also an interest in working with and promoting the rights of seniors and people with disabilities.

Member Duties : The VISTA will learn about CDEL’s Housing Projects. This will include training on housing law, landlord/tenant, property transfers and housing litigation, as well as the compliance aspects of CDEL’s work, including City of Chicago housing reporting. The outcome of this will be for the VISTA to become knowledgeable about housing law and to learn about the CDEL housing projects. The VISTA Coordinator will begin to work on combining and coordinating CDEL’s Outreach & Community Projects. The VISTA Coordinator will be introduced to the community partners of CDEL. The VISTA Coordinator will begin to work individually with the CDEL attorneys on setting up and “coordinating” the various community-based aspects of CDEL’s projects. The outcome of this component would be to begin to assimilate the programs and learn how the programs work together. The outcome of this component would be the full implementation of the Program and preparation to wind up the VISTA’s activities with the Program.
