Chicago HOPES for Kids AmeriCorps Program
Chicago HOPES for Kids provides shelter-based academic support for children in Chicago's homeless shelters. The program is volunteer based. Every volunteer works one-on-one or in a small group with children, grades K-5, to help them with their homework, with improving their reading and math skills, and with enrichment activities. Enrichment partners, such as Mad Science and Code Play Learn, provide extra STEM programming for the children. The program is after-school, M-Th, for 2 hours. The fall program begins in October and runs through mid-December; the winter/spring program begins in February and runs through mid-May; the summer program begins late June and runs through the first week of August. At each shelter, Site Coordinators manage the program and work with volunteers to help them provide quality academic support to the children. The after-school programs are held at 10 shelter sites throughout Chicago.
