Stewards VISTA: Rock Creek Conservancy

The RCC VISTA will support two major organizational objectives: cultivate a community of environmental stewardship and increase equity of access to Rock Creek Park. The program also advances restoration goals by engaging volunteers in direct service to Rock Creek, including invasive plant removal, native plant restoration, litter cleanups, and water quality monitoring (trash and bacteria). The 2018-2019 RCC VISTA helped to create a strong foundation for the volunteer program, increasing efficiency of administrative processes a creating a well-established pattern of opportunities, making the volunteer opportunities relatively easy to access. During this next year, a more focused understanding of community concerns through listening to current volunteers and observing community meetings will allow the VISTA to recommend ways to better connect the oasis projects to volunteers in communities historically disconnected from Rock Creek. The VISTA will also support the Rock Creek Conservation Corps (RC3) program, a summer conservation service opportunity for high school students, by engaging RC3 alumni in year-round service, allowing the VISTA and RCC staff to better understand those populations, and to empower the alumni as ambassadors within their schools to new participants.
