Program VISTA, VC STEM/US2020

The US2020 Ventura County STEM Network (VC STEM), working with Ventura County’s regional P-20 Council and the statewide California STEM Learning Network, serves as a leadership hub for regional stakeholders who are working together to improve educational outcomes in STEM for all students throughout Ventura County. In collaboration with US2020, VC STEM will launch a STEM mentoring program focusing on underrepresented communities in Ventura County. The collaborative effort between US2020 and VC STEM is being facilitated by California State University (CSU) Channel Islands. As a new STEM network, the Vision of VC STEM is that all P-20 students in Ventura County: 1) benefit from high quality STEM learning opportunities; 2) graduate with the STEM knowledge, skills, and applied learning capabilities necessary for success in STEM and non-STEM college education and careers; 3) and, possess the STEM knowledge, skills and awareness to positively impact our region, nation, and the world. VC STEM will accomplish its mission, vision & goals by coordinating & activating a multi-sector network of STEM leaders, policymakers, business & industry stakeholders, governmental agencies, non-profits, & educators to integrate STEM programming efforts across the county. One of its goals is to increase STEM interest, competencies, resources, and opportunities among PK-20 California students, especially for first-generation, low-income, and/or underrepresented students, with an emphasis on critical thinking, hands-on learning, problem-based approaches and the use of information technologies. In partnership with US2020 and other organizations that are involved in mentoring in Ventura County, VC STEM will launch a STEM mentoring initiative as part of a College and Career emphasis of the network which will focus on identifying, coordinating, & supporting existing local STEM mentoring. NOTE: A personal vehicle is required for service-related travel at this site; mileage will be reimbursed.
