Abandoned Properties Coalition

The Abandoned Properties Coalition works to convene and coordinate organizations and community leaders across the state that are working on abandoned and dilapidated property issues. The Abandoned Properties Coalition VISTA Member will build the capacity of the Abandoned Properties Coalition (APC) to revitalize communities and economies and reduce health and safety hazards in three primary ways. First, the VISTA Member will develop materials which will guide and support the ongoing internal function of the APC, enabling the coalition to increase capacity to present solutions to property abandonment and blight. Second, the VISTA Member will build a list of potential funding organizations and grants and apply for those grants to build the ability of the APC to implement programs. Third, the VISTA Member will support APC teams by conducting research, coordinating educational events, and developing educational materials to support the dissemination of information on solutions to abandoned properties. As a result of the VISTA Member’s service, more communities and organizations will be aware of the Abandoned Properties Coalition, tools and assistance to help with abandoned buildings will be more readily available, and more communities in West Virginia will develop programs to mitigate dilapidation of buildings and blight.
