Stewards VISTA: Rock Creek Conservancy

Rock Creek Park is a 2,000-acre national park found in the heart of Washington, DC. Bisected by residential and commercial areas on all sides, the Eastern border of Rock Creek Park features some of the only residential neighborhoods in the northwest quadrant of Washington, DC that see residential poverty rates above 30%. Rock Creek Conservancy is the official Friends Group of Rock Creek Park and works in close concert with the National Park Service – Rock Creek Park to provide support around conservation, access, and education. Our goal is to restore Rock Creek and its parkland as a natural oasis for all individuals to enjoy. Rock Creek Park faces an enormous maintenance backlog and its proximity to such an urbanized area leaves it susceptible to threats of trash accumulation, invasive plant species proliferation, and stormwater runoff concerns. In support of these issues, Rock Creek Conservancy’s volunteer program engages over 3,000 volunteers each year on National Park Service land and the surrounding watershed. These stewardship opportunities engage volunteers in the protection of Rock Creek Park, but the Conservancy continues to see lower numbers of diverse communities joining our volunteering endeavors. Utilizing NPS's strong systems to support volunteer opportunities, the Stewards VISTA will create targeted programming to engage low income and diverse residents on the Eastern border of Rock Creek Park to reengage them around their natural resource that falls just next door. By making significant in-roads into local communities near Rock Creek Park, the Stewards VISTA will aim to broaden the public support behind Rock Creek Park as a resource, empower community members to support park improvements through stewardship both inside and outside park borders, and put the Park back in the community spotlight that localized neighborhoods want to advocate for and protect. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis, please do not wait to apply.
