Children's Feeding Programs Co-Coordinator VISTA - UWTC

The St. Leo Food Connection’s Children’s Feeding Programs are a response to the prevalence of hunger in our community. Each month in Pierce County more than 110,000 children, seniors and adults seek help finding food. Of these individuals 53% are children and seniors (39% children under 18, 14% individuals over 55) Rates of food insecurity are higher in households with children. Nationally, 16.6 million American children live in households that experience food insecurity – 22.4 % of all children. The Children’s Alliance estimates that more than 440,000 children in Washington – or 25 %– live in food insecure households. Hungry children suffer from health problems such as unwanted weight loss, fatigue, headaches, and frequent colds. They are more likely to be ill and absent from school and typically cannot concentrate or do as well as others when they are at school. Our Children’s Feeding Programs consist of the following: • Backpack Program, which provides two days worth of food on weekends throughout the school year to more than 1,100 children at risk of going hungry • Break Bag Program, which provides bags of groceries to 2,000 households for the Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring School Breaks • After School Snacks, which provides healthy snacks to more than 200 children for after school programs throughout the school year • Summer Meals Program, which provides lunch to more 450-550 children on weekdays throughout the summer. The VISTA works together with the other co-coordinator to oversee and grow these programs. Responsibilities include outreach to partner schools and agencies, data collection, recruitment and training of volunteers and Summer Meals staff, and community outreach.
