FIT VISTA- Arts in Reach-Marketing and Research VISTA
Arts in Reach's (AIR's) mission is to empower teenage girls through mentoring and the arts. AIR emphasizes positive mentoring, healthy lifestyle coaching, and personal development through year-round after-school and vacation programming in performance, literary, and visual arts. AIR makes these enrichment opportunities accessible to all participants by providing programs, transportation, healthy snacks, and supplies completely free of charge. All teens we serve reside in Rockingham and Strafford Counties, New Hampshire. In FY17 we served 83 individual teenage girls and had over 170 program placements with many of our teens participating in more than one program. Our goal is to reach 100 unique teens with over 190 program placement opportunities including our Advance On AIR program for older teens, ages 16 to 20. Of our FY 2017 program participants, 57% quality for Free-or-Reduced Lunch at school, 42% live in single-parent households of which 76% are female led, and 74% have been diagnosed with some form of physical, learning, or mental health disorder. In total 68% of our participants used transportation provided by AIR to access our programs and 12% reported unstable/transitional housing. Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicates that nearly one in five girls have considered suicide. Teens we serve experience substance misuse, depression, social isolation, abuse and bullying, which all can lead to death by suicide. With the current "Me Too" movement, young women need guidance for respecting themselves and identifying inappropriate behavior. Often they are afraid to report abuse due to limited social resources and economic need. AIR provides at-risk young women safe places to explore feelings, express authentic voices, and learn important life and work skills. Teen girls need programs to build their self-confidence and help them avoid the dangers of sexual harassment and abuse, domestic assault, substance use, and other self-destructive behaviors.
