Stewards VISTA: Friends of the Heinz Refuge
The Friends of the Heinz Refuge is a non-profit environmental organization that provides support to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, the first urban refuge in the country, and its community. The Friends all volunteer board identifies and secures funding for the refuge, organize and host programs, manage a nature store on the grounds, and help elsewhere as needed in the community and in Fish and Wildlife activities. The Stewards Vista will provide support on all these items and new initiatives to increase the capacity of the Friends of Heinz Refuge. By increasing the capacity, the Friends provide community assistance and outreach in the Eastwick Philadelphia and Delaware county communities in the region, and ultimately hire someone that can provide these services. A key component of the community assistance and outreach is empowering the community through equitable and sustainable development and preservation as appropriate of lands surrounding the refuge boundaries.
