AmeriCorps City Gate Inc. in Washington, DC

City Gate provides full year, multi-faceted out-of-school time programs in schools, community centers, and public housing sites designed to close the achievement gap and open a pathway to long-term academic and life success for economically-disadvantaged students. Programs include homework help, recreation, and meals but focus on five core components: STEM and project-based learning; Adaptive learning which blends web-based curriculum with personalized instruction and interventions; A reading emphasis designed to develop fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking; Off-site expeditionary learning to connect youth to their community and develop social capital; and family engagement to support learning in the home. This comprehensive model, developed out of two decades of community-based work, has proven to improve academic performance as well as social and emotional learning outcomes, and provides a practical foundation for long-term success in education, employment, and civic engagement. AmeriCorps members will have specific site and age-level assignments, while being a valued team member in the overall implementation of the program. An ongoing program of training and reflection will give them the tools to impact the youth and neighborhoods they serve, while providing valuable skills and experience for future employment and community service.
