CAN - TXRX Labs Houston - Maker Install Coordinator VISTA

TXRX Labs, founded in 2009, located in Houston’s East End, is a nonprofit 501(c)3 makerspace that provides over 750 classes each year for adults and youth to receive training in computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines: 3D printers, laser cutters, plasma cutters, lathes, mills, water jets, and router tables, and the foundational software for CNC machining: computer aided drafting (CAD), and computer aided manufacturing (CAM). TXRX’s 50,000 square foot facility serves over 4,000 Houstonians each year and is staffed by professional educators, engineers, inventors, artists, and coders, who help others use high-tech tools to turn ideas into realities. TXRX Labs is a makerspace located in Houston, Texas that provide community classes in welding, woodworking, 3D printing, and other prototyping techniques. TXRX is installing three makerspaces in HISD elementary and middle schools. The makerspaces will engage the students, teachers, and broader community in hands-on problem based learning, vocational training, and exposure to careers in STEM. Through this program, TXRX hopes to increase the students’ ability to make, manufacture, and fabricate the world around them. With these technical skills, students will have the ability to obtain manufacturing jobs, vocational training, and/or attend a college/university of their choice and therefore will have multiple clear paths out of poverty. The three VISTA Maker Space Coordinators will build the capacity of the HISD makerspaces by enhancing project-based curriculum, maintaining equipment, providing professional development to teachers, documenting use of maker-spaces through blogs, and coordinating events, workshops, and fundraisers to engage the broader school communities in making, manufacturing, and fabricating.
