UWCCR Health Meals Program VISTA

United Way California Capital Region (UWCCR) has kicked off our most ambitious project in our 90 year history - a new approach to ending poverty and equipping schools with the resources to be a ground-level force for children's success. With your help, the Square One Project will change the lives of a whole generation of kids in our community. For the next 20 years, all of our work will focus on keeping kids in schools and on track, setting high expectations and ensuring they have strong support. Our Healthy Meals Program (HMP) is part of the Square One Project. We're making sure kids not only have enough to eat, but that they have well-balanced nutritious meals so they can learn and succeed in school. During the school year, kids enjoy healthy after-school meals. During the summer, kids enjoy healthy lunches and fun activities at community centers, libraries, and housing communities. All year long, kids enjoy fresh, local, and seasonal food. The HMP is working to dramatically increase the number of well-balanced nutritious (and FREE) meals that local children eat to give them the nutrition they need to learn, play and grow. In the capital region, one in five children do not have enough food. Federal programs exist to help kids, but many nonprofits and schools lack staff or technical support to make these programs happen in their communities. We're filling those gaps to ensure every child has access to nutritious meals, even during the summer months when they are out of school. Since Healthy Meals launched in 2014, we have served more than 957,000 healthy meals in after-school programs and during summer months. We currently serve more than 400 healthy meals per day in after-school programs in Sacramento, Placer, and Yolo counties. Join us as we march to one million meals served!

Member Duties : The Healthy Meals Program VISTA will assist our Healthy Meals Program Manager on the overall strategy and vision for UWCCR's goal to increase access to meals in low-income areas. The VISTA will help build a strong and sustainable program model for 2019 and beyond, as well as link with our other HMP and Square One work. Duties include: create a volunteer program to assist our current meal sites with the operation of the program, and conduct visits to sites to develop and provide additional capacity-building training and expand on existing program opportunities and offerings. Many programs run through evening hours so schedule is flexible but having a vehicle is a requirement due to sites in Sacramento, Placer and Yolo counties. The Healthy Meals Program consists of two federal reimbursement programs administered by the United States Department of Agriculture; the Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer Feed Service Program. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
