Stewards VISTA: Friends of the Dunes

Friends of the Dunes (FOD) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to conserving the natural diversity of coastal environments through community supported education and stewardship programs. Based in Humboldt County California, FOD is best known for coastal ecosystem restoration, environmental education programs, and guided walks. FOD manages the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center, an interpretive facility and 118 acre land trust which is home to diverse coastal habitats including dunes, forests, wetlands, and beaches. FOD’s programs are well-established and respected within our community, but tend to serve a limited demographic. The Coastal Education and Stewardship Project will expand the reach of FOD’s education and stewardship programs to engage under served groups within our community. Some goals of the project include providing free field trips to coastal environments for K-12 schools, participating in outreach efforts to engage more volunteers and donors from diverse backgrounds in FOD’s mission, and improving free educational resources and programs at the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center.
