SVUB Resource Center Development VISTA

Silver Valley Upward Bound (SVUB) operates as an anti-poverty program in the Silver Valley, providing educational outreach services to eligible families in the target communities since 2007. SVUB operates Monday – Friday, year-round; during the academic year, both Wallace and Kellogg high school are staffed by their assigned outreach staff four days per week. During the academic year, SVUB provides a six-week residential academic program aimed at providing a college simulation for participants, often including dual credit opportunities. Academic year services include field trips, college visits, tutoring, career advising, scholarship workshops, financial aid workshops, assistance with college applications, and other relevant activities. Summer programming tends to be more focused and includes the required coursework in science, math, composition, literature, and foreign language.

Member Duties : Silver Valley Upward Bound (SVUB) proposes to sponsor the VISTA member in developing a community/parent information and resource center (CPIRC) to foster a change in the college-going attitude in the Silver Valley through targeted recruitment of volunteers, community engagement plans, and facilitation of regular meetings. The VISTA member would conduct research, work with community members, and develop a plan for parents to become engaged in their child’s education for the purpose of increasing the college-going population of the Silver Valley, particularly amongst low-income/first generation students. The CPIRC will be comprised of volunteers from the Silver Valley (primarily Kellogg and Wallace) to take advantage of the student services and support structures already in place with the SVUB project and staff.
