HREI Higher Education Opportunities VISTA
The Human Rights Education Institute’s mission is to celebrate diversity and promote human rights by educating, raising awareness and recognizing the value of all humanity. Many high schools career days and college outreach programs provide students with general information about academic programs but don’t work closely with students to address real or perceived barriers to educational access. Our program will stimulate small group student discussion, create mentoring opportunities, bring light to college scholarships and the application process, create an intimate targeted career fair model, and support workshops to increase higher education participation among this age group. The goals of this project are to provide a deeper engagement with students than existing school resources and community groups are currently providing.

Member Duties : The HREI project will have four initial phases in year 1. The first phase will consist of research and identifying community partners in North Idaho, creating introductions and building relationships for program needs. The second phase will consist of affirming goals, identifying approach strategies to achieve the expected outcomes of the project. The third phase will be to create a sampling of students, based on counselor and teacher recommendations, from regional schools to participate in the pilot of our project. Finally, in the fourth phase implementation will begin. Students will be given an opportunity to participate in all aspects of the proposed activities to include small group student discussion, mentoring opportunities, searching college scholarships and guided support in the scholarship application process, one to one career exploration with area professionals, and workshops supporting emotional and technical process in taking the next step in post high school education.
