PROGRAM: The fulltime & part-time members of the VT Youth Development Corps AmeriCorps State Program (VYDC) implement diverse youth initiatives, fostering positive development & building resilience to help youth avoid opioid misuse & other unhealthy behaviors, transcend the effects of COVID-19, and the gain academic, social, & job skills needed to thrive. Website: VermontYouthAmeriCorps.org SITE: The Willowell Foundation connects people to the arts, education, the environment, and each other through land-based programs and activities. The Wren’s Nest Forest Preschool, run by Willowell, is a partner program to our internationally recognized outdoor public high school, The Walden Project. VYDC-Willowell Preschool Program and Outreach AmeriCorps Member serves 4-5 days a week at Wren’s Nest collaborating on and leading a nature-based curriculum. Supported by a dynamic teaching team, the member leads hikes, nature art and garden activities, storytelling, wildlife tracking, and identifying birds and wild edibles. The member leads lessons that emphasize physical movement and nutrition. The member serves in the office 1-2 days a week, creating a public outreach strategy, distributing PR materials, writing non-federal grants for member-supported initiatives, recruiting and training volunteers, and enhancing our capacity to support children from low-income and at risk families. The impact of this position is measured by the number of young children who gain confidence and skills in their nature-based classroom. The member collaborates with staff to maintain excellence-in-education standards, as well as build capacity for scholarships. The member creates avenues for at-risk families to thrive socially and emotionally, provides families with information about available resources, and organizes outreach efforts to families of young children. Member Duties : The VYDC-Willowell Preschool Program and Outreach AmeriCorps Member is a positive role model who supports children at Wren’s Nest Forest Preschool by leading outdoor physical activities (hiking, sensory awareness, & wilderness skills); planning & serving healthy snacks; planning & implementing Pre-K arts & science curricula; assisting families in accessing economic resources; hosting family community engagement opportunities (workshops and support groups); and recruiting and managing volunteers. The member builds program capacity through outreach to families of varying socio-economic backgrounds, writing non-federal grants & assisting with fundraising events to leverage resources for member-supported initiatives, and PR and community outreach initiatives. Access to reliable private transportation & valid license required for travel between Willowell sites & to monthly AmeriCorps training in Montpelier. Minimum age: 20.
