Stewards VISTA: NYC H20
NYC H2O offers Water Ecology & Engineering Field Trips to engage urban students in STEM-centered learning about New York City’s water supply, infrastructure, and ecology. Providing free access to natural settings and historic sites in educational, active, and innovative ways, NYC H2O field trips foster understanding of natural history, engineering, and science while encouraging young people to become active and responsible stewards through learning about the need to maintain a clean, reliable water system in times of increasing demand and resource scarcity. The field trip program reaches under served public schools in neighborhoods that are racially and ethnically diverse. Most students have not had the opportunity to participate in a STEM field trip and live in under served areas. Our program helps to remedy these challenges while also overcoming the barriers affecting water ecology and environmental justice issues, such as low student engagement in civics, science, and nature and limited physical activity for youth in school settings. Our goal is to foster a new generation of concerned and active urban environmental advocates and water stewards who safeguard water as a scarce, precious resource. More recently, NYC H2O has also been dedicated to advocating for resiliency and sustainability planning at the Ridgewood Reservoir in the hopes of building an interpretive nature center to improve public access and environmental education opportunities at this historic site. We are engaging stakeholders from the Reservoir’s surrounding communities of Brooklyn and Queens to guide the vision plan for this nature center. The ongoing reclamation of the Ridgewood Reservoir is a valuable model for the future ecological revival, restoration, and stewardship of the primarily Black and Latino Cypress Hills and East New York communities and offers rich possibilities for nature-based education as well as urban recreation.

Member Duties : *Prefer degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, English, History, or Environment* The VISTA will support all programs, with service focused on Ridgewood Reservoir. As we working building the nature center, our current focus is establishing a formal partnership with the NYC Parks Department, entering into a License Agreement to build and operate the center, applying for funds, and creating a sustainability and restoration plan for the reservoir. Working towards forming university partnerships for on-site research projects, to increase access to the reservoir and increasing community involvement. VISTA will contribute to this process through capacity-building, primarily development and outreach, to ensure task completion. Grant-writing and organizing fundraising are primary responsibilities, with regular engagement in NYC H2O’s social media and outreach. VISTA will also help brainstorm strategies for community involvement, project planning, and nature center development.
