19-20 OLLI Community Engagement Coord. VISTA

Nevada is one of the fastest aging states in the United States and the "Enhancing Well-Being and Health Outcomes Among Older Adults" VISTA project aims to build capacity for programs and services that support older adults. The Sanford Center for Aging, based out of the University of Nevada, Reno's School of Medicine is the sponsor for the project and is working with five community sub-sites to foster collaboration and expand the scope of supports and services aimed at enhancing quality of life for our aging community. The vast majority of older adults in our community report feelings of social isolation and loneliness and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute increases opportunities for social connectedness and meaningful engagement by offering a wide variety of educational, social, volunteer, and leadership opportunities for its members. The VISTA member will help OLLI build and diversify its membership base, support the integration of services and programs for older adults, and increase opportunities for volunteerism.

Member Duties : The goal of the Community Engagement Coordinator VISTA position is to enhance quality of life and well-being among elders in Washoe County, Nevada by aiding in the promotion of meaningful opportunities for lifelong learning, engagement, and volunteerism. Washoe County is one of the fastest ageing communities in the United States and the vast majority of elders in our community report feelings of social isolation and loneliness. Social isolation is correlated with increased risk of adverse health outcomes, as well as with drug and opioid abuse, and low-income older adults are the most likely to be isolated. The VISTA member will help reduce the impact of poverty and social isolation among older adults by working with community partners to expand the reach and scope of existing programs and services in Northern Nevada.
