PLEASE COMPLETE AN APPLICATION AT http://thesca.force.com/members/NewRegistration The Student Conservation Association (SCA) proposes to have about 1200 AmeriCorps members serve this year who will protect, restore and enhance public lands and waters as well as natural, cultural, and historical resources in all 50 states in addition to Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa. SCA AmeriCorps member activities will include: * Restoration and protection-- Example projects: removal of invasive species, delineation of visitor use areas such as campgrounds and trails from restoration areas, preservation of historic structures. * Resource assessments, mapping and monitoring-- Example projects: establishing long-term vegetation, invasive species, climate and bird monitoring programs; wildlife surveys; monitoring weather stations and wildlife cameras; exotic plant early detection transects. * Environmental education and Interpretation-- Example projects: on-site interpretation to visitors about natural history of the area, resource protection efforts and research findings; children's Junior Ranger program development; and backcountry education about safety and Leave No Trace principles. Member Duties : Members will protect, restore and enhance public lands and waters as well as natural, cultural, and historical resources through the following duties: *Educating others through interpretative programs, tours, or programs *Provide visitor services *Leading volunteers in service activities *Removing invasive plants *Planting vegetation *Opening trail (blowdowns, brushing, widening) *Animal/fisheries banding, capturing, relocating *Conducting surveys, assessments, or inventories *Conducting sampling efforts or monitoring plots. Members will not take part in any of the following prohibited activities during their service: influencing legislation, partisan political activities, political endorsements, religious proselytization, union organization, boycotts or strikes, engaging in abortion services or referrals, money-handling, voter registration drives, and benefiting a for-profit business.
