Literacy Resource Coordinator - Hawaii Literacy

Founded in 1971, Hawaii Literacy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to serving Hawaii’s high need communities. We provide free literacy tutoring, thousands of books, literacy-building activities, and educational help for 3,000 adults and children in need each year. Through our services, we hope to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty by giving disadvantaged children and adults the opportunity for a better future, and encouraging greater literacy to help build stronger communities. The VISTA member will build capacity by developing and curating additional, replicable resources that will benefit and serve lower-income families and low-literacy and ELL adults, and provide culturally and audience appropriate resources and training modules to increase literacy and reading strategies expertise across many stakeholders in the community. The VISTA will work on the following objectives: Develop additional training and resource materials that can effectively address requested client and family support topics, to increase parent and family involvement in reading and school success and help lower-literacy parents and adults access and understand information that can help better their lives and opportunities. Build capacity and use of new and adapted materials and in-house training for staff, volunteers, and junior leaders to increase effectiveness of literacy activities and impact. Develop and adapt trainings and assist in providing trainings to external partner social service agencies and government service providers, to increase awareness of literacy services and resources and strategies to help struggling readers and resource poor families. Work with Adult Literacy staff to grow a pilot Learner Council project to meet needs of lower-income adults and parents to increase family assets, knowledge, and community connections.
