2018-2019 Resident Services Associate VISTA

Founded in 1982, LUCHA has evolved into one the Midwest’s premiere housing advocates. LUCHA has effectively organized community members to fight for better housing services from both public and private sectors. It also works with community residents to access housing products and services, provide housing counseling, and coordinate technical assistance. Engaging in this work led LUCHA to develop subsequent buildings using green construction, Passive House, and integrated health and wellness programming. Today, LUCHA continues advancing housing as a human right through these initiatives which ensure that everyone has access to resources which enable their households to thrive. Someone who speaks Spanish is preferred. A creative problem solver as well as someone who is a natural networker will be important. Someone who can work well with employers and employees as well as people from very diverse race and class backgrounds would be optimalOur VISTA will work with Resident Services staff to document and plan for future work regarding health and wellness programs including gardening, cooking, biking, and other forms of exercise. This will include documenting existing work and surveying best practices locally, nationally, and around the world. Many LUCHA tenants work for temporary employment firms, or agencies who hire them to do home visits regarding housekeeping or basic home patient care. This work is very irregular and unstable and offers no benefits. This person will survey workers in this situation, as well as the agencies in question, in order to develop short term and long term stable employment path options for these tenants. Best practices research will also be involved. Finally, unstable child care is also a problem facing these workers. Options for child care as a benefit and as employment will also be explored. All of the above will be done with building tenant digital access and competency in mind.
