Stewards VISTA: Energy Savings for Appalachia

Electric utilities have enormous impacts on our economy, environment and public health. In the Tennessee Valley, our region has been served by “public power” utilities since the 1930s. Unfortunately, these publicly owned utilities have not been democratically governed by the residents they serve. This lack of public involvement has resulted in decades of investment in the coal industry, high energy burdens, and significant barriers to accessing renewable energy and energy efficiency. Appalachian Voices’ Energy Democracy program seeks to activate and engage ratepayers in the Valley around electric utility reform, leading to increased access to cleaner, more equitable and affordable energy, broadband internet and other programs that would add jobs and improve quality of life for communities.
