About Illinois Legal Aid Online: The legal system is complex, expensive, and designed to be navigated by trained attorneys. Many people can't afford a lawyer, but they still must engage in the legal system to solve critical problems like domestic violence, divorce, and foreclosure. Illinois Legal Aid Online uses technology to lower barriers to the law so that people can understand their legal options, make informed decisions, and when necessary represent themselves in court. IllinoisLegalAid.org was recently touted as the nation’s best website of its kind. Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO) is nationally recognized as a leader in using technology to provide understandable, free legal resources to people in need of legal assistance, and essential training and practice support to legal aid and pro bono attorneys. It has been recognized for its groundbreaking work with awards from the American Bar Association, the Foundation for Improvement of Justice, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, the IT Resource Center and Accenture, and LivePerson Software. Service Description The goal of the User Research VISTA project is to improve the experience of people using Illinois Legal Aid Online's (ILAO) free, legal self-help resources with the ultimate aim of improving legal outcomes for Illinois' lower-income, disabled, and senior residents. The VISTA will be responsible for coordinating efforts to understand who are users are, what their legal problems are, and how ILAO can better serve them. The VISTA will develop centralized systems and processes for recruiting and engaging user panels and testers, and conduct focus groups, individual user interviews, other user studies, and usability testing to recommending ways to improve ILAO’s products and services.
