Kokua Kalihi Valley Roots Program

The goals of the ROOTs Project are to: 1) Strengthen relationships across food sectors in Kalihi; 2) Re-establish a “foodshed” that connects community members to food, land, culture, and their neighbors; and 3) Promote food equity and the local farm economy by providing easily accessible and affordable markets. Project goals, objectives, and outcomes are guided by a commitment to food solutions that not only enhance long-term food security, but also contribute to strengthening the economic, cultural, and social fabric of the Kalihi community. Activities offer participants an immersive experience in the local food system by (1) leveraging connections made within KKV’s Parity-in-Nutrition-Access (PAINA) Food Hub Coalition to engage the community in meaningful discussions around food production; (2) Providing a market for local producers and vendors to access consumers; (3) Engaging community groups in land stewardship, organic farming, and nutrition education within the context of cultural immersion; and (4) Providing a platform for demonstrating that local food, in particular cultural food, can easily be re-integrated into an individual’s diet.
