Strong City/Esperanza Center: Youth ESOL Capacity Builder
 
 
 
This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with the Esperanza Center in Baltimore, MD. Strong City sponsors 30 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to the Esperanza Center and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities, and meetings. The Esperanza Center is a comprehensive immigrant resource center that offers hope and essential services to people who are new to the United States. Immigrants from all over the world have received important resources and compassionate guidance at the Esperanza Center since 1963. Our dedicated staff and volunteers provide services and referrals, ESL education, healthcare, and low-cost immigration legal services to thousands of immigrants each year.

Member Duties : The goal of this project is to assess, improve, and grow a successful Youth English Language Program, providing the opportunity for middle and high school students to learn English, helping them to be successful in school. The VISTA will: 1) Conduct program assessments with current stakeholders; provide recommendations 2) Research grants and available funding sources to expand the Esperanza Center’s youth ESOL programs 3) Recruit for volunteers and partner with Baltimore City Public Schools and other community organizations to recruit for students to attend ESOL after school and summer programs 4) Assist in coordinating logistics of ESOL after-school and summer programs
