World Relief Seattle is the largest refugee resettlement agency in Western Washington and has been serving refugees and other vulnerable immigrants in the Seattle area since 1979. Refugees and immigrants bravely leave behind everything familiar to seek safety, a life free from fear, and the chance for a new start. At World Relief Seattle, we come alongside these new neighbors by providing support and care through their first months and years of transition. This support includes case management, orientation to American culture and systems, job placement assistance, English language classes, skills development classes, housing assistance, immigration legal services, youth programming, and mutually-transformative relationships with community volunteers, and more. World Relief Seattle envisions every refugee and vulnerable immigrant welcomed by community, rooted in community, and empowered for community. Our work is informed by the belief that every refugee and vulnerable immigrant has an important place in our community. From the time of arrival to the first job to citizenship and beyond, the World Relief community is committed to serving and being served by this brave and resilient population. AmeriCorps members serving at World Relief Seattle play valuable roles on our English, Employment, Health & Wellness, and Resiliency teams by enhancing our ability to provide robust and tailored services to our participants and to provide expanded support and training to our volunteers. This particular AmeriCorps member will serve alongside both our ESL team as they partner with language learners to build their confidence and skills in English communication to enable them to function and thrive in their new American context, and our Resiliency team as they empower participants to multiply their strengths and contribute to the community. All AmeriCorps positions are contingent on continued funding from the federal funding source CNCS (AmeriCorps Program).

Member Duties : The purpose of the women’s sewing class at World Relief is to provide vocational ESL related to sewing, build confidence and community among the women, build on basic sewing skill levels and provide a pathway for those to move on to further training to enter the work force. Most of the women in the class are pre-literate. This AmeriCorps member will develop sewing skills-related English training to be embedded in the sewing curriculum. During the summer season when the sewing program is on hiatus and the refugee community garden is in full swing, the member will develop ESL skill-building curriculum related to gardening. The curriculum will include hands-on activities that enhance listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills with pre- and post-tests to measure gains.
