Strong City/Bester Community of Hope: Healthy Futures VISTA
 
 
 
This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with Bester Community of Hope in Hagerstown,MD. Bester Community of Hope is an initiative of San Mar, focused on prevention with a place-based strategy for positive outcomes for the children and families located in the Bester Elementary School neighborhood in Hagerstown, Maryland. Bester Community of Hope is one of 14 sites nationally supported by Casey Family Programs to support their broader efforts to safely reduce the number of children placed outside of their home by building “Communities of Hope.” Strong City sponsors 20 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to Bester Community of Hope and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities, and meetings. The Office of Student Services at Washington County Public Schools reports that for chronic health issues (anything which the nurse is on alert) Bester Elementary is the #1 school in the county according to need. The VISTA member will assist in the creation of a comprehensive physical health initiative and integrating systems of care will ensure positive outcomes for at-risk youth at Bester Elementary School. Healthy Futures VISTA would focus on the creation and implementation of system redesign to integrate and promote healthcare services and ensure access by youth at Bester Elementary school, the priority population, as well as quality assurance development such as baseline research regarding the needs of children and families in the identified community.

Member Duties : The goal of this VISTA project is integrate and promote healthcare services and ensure access by youth at Bester Elementary school. The VISTA will: 1. Connect to services such as insurance enrollment, managing and linking parents to a database of primary care service providers 2. Support operational activities of the school based health center 3. Create a baseline of 100% enrollment in public/private insurance programs and a working process for new students to register at the time of school admission 4. Create a database of wellness providers 5. Establish a new culture of healthy habits and early intervention practices through strategic partnerships and annual events 6. Integrate mental health, dental and vision needs at the school
