Training Support Associate VISTA - UWTC
 
 
 
Kokua: Hawaiian for “support” and “encourage”. Kokua has been supporting individuals with disabilities for 27 years. Our services range from medication support to community integration, building relationships to medical and behavioral health care. Working alongside the individuals we serve, the staff perform tasks designed to increase client independence. Kokua hires and trains staff with little to no experience, setting these staff up for careers in the health and social service fields. However, this great work requires a robust and efficient training model, one that we are hoping the VISTA will support to create. Providing the best possible service for our clients requires these augmented systems, this VISTA training position will help us meet this goal and continue our long tradition of excellent client care.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will be working on projects that build our training and recruitment capacity. The VISTA will begin this position by learning the state-required curriculum for Supported Living providers, then working with our Training Coordinator to organize the trainings to maximize efficiency and consider all learning styles. They will then work to create individual training manuals for the positions across the agency. The VISTA will create a staff training database. They will assist in the creation of Kokua’s resource room, this work entails research into community resources and activities, organizing the information for use by Kokua clients and local families. Next the VISTA will work with the Kokua administration on staff retention efforts, researching proven strategies and work to implement approved initiatives. Finally, the VISTA will support in the creation of a new referral program, introducing efficiency and communication into the process of bringing on new clients.
